Dave Spurgin Art
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is an abstract exploration of the human condition. While it is often connected to natural
landscapes, it goes beyond the visible world to reflect on what makes each of us distinct and
worthy of celebration, flaws included. Through painting, I seek to connect with the energy of the
universe and deepen my understanding of how we are all woven into life’s larger tapestry. I
approach each piece without preplanning, allowing intuition to guide my choice of colors, tools,
and techniques. By moving beyond traditional methods, I have developed a process that lets me
work both on the canvas and through the painting itself, creating space to explore the world in a
meaningful way.

David Gerard Spurgin was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent the last 25 years of
his life in Charleston, South Carolina. One of five siblings he was known as the loud,
determined, and gritty one. He sees life as an epic journey to be explored, a perspective that
continues to shape his art.
Over the years, Dave worked and traveled throughout the United States, Europe, and
Southwest Asia. He eventually settled in South Carolina, where the close-knit life on Sullivan’s
Island suited him well. Drawing on his creativity and drive, he built a successful design and sign
fabrication company.
Then, just as life seemed settled, Dave faced a challenge many fear: a potential cancer
diagnosis. The experience led him to reevaluate his priorities and embrace a more intentional
way of living, focused on making the most of every moment.
At 54, Dave sold his business and began searching for a deeper sense of purpose. Painting
became both therapy and passion. Raised in a creative family—his mother was an
accomplished oil, pencil, and pastel artist—he developed a strong artistic eye over time. He
refined it through his work creating signage for local and national brands, where he learned
lessons in construction, design balance, and the power of color.
Now working independently, Dave paints to express balance, love, passion, and gratitude for
life. His art draws inspiration from the Lowcountry, his travels, and the natural world. Through
his work, he seeks to create meaning amid chaos and inspire others to live with purpose, free
from fear or regret.
