Pumpkin spice lattes showing up in your local coffee shop can only mean one thing: fall is here. Well, not quite officially but after 21 days of rain this past July and our usual painfully hot summer, we’re ready for some (slightly) cooler temperatures and all of the activities that come with the changing of the seasons. As children head back to school and last minute vacations come to an end, many of us are anxiously awaiting the arrival of September 22nd.
Whether you’re going solo or with friends and family, there are plenty of things to do in and around Charleston. Without further ado, here is a brief list of 5 things to do in the fall in Charleston:
Explore Boone Hall - Ongoing
With a history dating back to 1681, Boone Hall has been open to the public since 1956. Offering top-notch historical tours, Boone Hall is constantly rated one of the best attractions in the area. In modern day, the plantation has been a suitable venue to many weddings some even involving celebrities. Fitting, as the vast and beautiful land at Boone Hall has also been featured in various television series and films as well. The plantation is still active in producing strawberries, tomatoes, peaches and a variety of other seasonal produce. Get down and dirty and pick some for yourself or head across the street to the always warm and inviting Boone Hall market and cafe.
Fright Nights at Boone Hall offer spooktacular fun for the those feeling a little adventurous. Recommended for ages 12 and up, the events feature menacing hayrides with a spine-tingling cast of characters, a rickety haunted house filled with psychopaths, and plenty of guts and ghouls to boot. Definitely not for the weak at heart.
Too much? Not in the mood to be frightened? Boone Hall also offers lighter family fun by ways of their corn maze and pumpkin patch. From petting zoos to playgrounds Boone Hall has something for the whole family. Pick pumpkins by the pound and be sure to stop by their retail tent for other autumn-themed goodies.

Take a Ghost Tour - Ongoing
Any time is a good time to take a ghost tour but Fall is undoubtedly the best time. The chill in the air, the gas lamps, the well-preserved, historical construction and layout of Charleston all play pivotal roles in creating a potentially ghoulish paranormal experience. Walk through the cobblestone streets or through one of Charleston’s historical cemeteries and experience why Charleston is one of America’s most haunted cities.

Dinner and a Movie - Various Dates
Perfect for date night, Terrace Theater is a personal favorite of ours. It’s a small and intimate theater off of Maybank Highway on James Island. A truly classic theater, paintings of famous movie scenes line the walls of the comfortable lounge style lobby. Terrace offers a generous selection of classic movie snacks and alcohol for those so inclined.
Along with a remake of Halloween co-written by recent Charleston transplant Danny McBride, and their screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on the first Friday of every month, Terrace is also showing Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ this month. Get there early because parking can become an issue.
Those looking to score some extra brownie points and a full belly on date night should try one of the restaurants in the plaza as well.
If you don’t mind the carbs, Crust serves up gourmet pizza in a lowkey setting with plenty of drink options to go around. We recommend the garlic fries with the homemade aioli sauce. Depending on the size of your party, you might want to order up because these will go quick.
Terrace Theater is located at 1956 Maybank Hwy, Charleston, SC 29412
